Movie Mondays
In mid-2010, Seeds for Change came across an amazing website created by California filmmaker Christopher Davenport. His site 501videos.com offers non-profit professionals 3 - 5 minute video clips on all things related to the industry. It is free to sign up for his Movie Mondays - a single weekly email with an embedded video clip. We will also re-post links here to videos we feel are the most relevant to our clients, our region and those that answer the most current and burning questions. We'll change these regularly so check back often.
Thanks to Christopher for this incredible gift to the non-profit industry!

In today's video, Stuart shares four of the rules he follows when writing fundraising appeals and letters. He'll also give you examples of when writing went bad (when the four rules weren't followed).

Can a donor give advice that's really worth $10,000?
When Brent Hafele was first starting out as a fundraiser, he made a very common mistake when it came time to make an ask. Luckily, the donor was gracious enough to give Brent some very helpful advice.
In this video, Brent tells the tale and what he learned many years ago, and why it has made a huge impact on his fundraising efforts over the years. Here's the link:

From February 11, 2013 -- Articulating Your Vision to Inspire Others to Give
Can you easily inspire people with your vision?
Many times when I've asked a development director or an executive director about what their nonprofit does, I get a laundry list of programs and services. Laundry lists don't inspire me, and the research out there shows that I'm not alone.
When I met Deidre McCormack Martin, I asked her about her organization. Instead of giving me a laundry list of programs and services, she told me what made her organization so special and how they improve the community. And she did it in a very succinct way.
Deidre is the Executive Director at Summer Search Seattle. She learned that in order to inspire people to give, she needed to be able to articulate the vision in a way that would resonate with people outside their organization. She also got her board to be able to articulate the vision and have inspiring stories to back up the vision.
In this video you'll learn how they were able to articulate their vision so well.

From November 28, 2011 --- Current Donors
Does the promise of new donors sound better than engaging the donors you already have? In today's video, Susan Howlett will give you specific examples of how other nonprofit organizations have engaged current donors on a deeper level, and therefore raised more money from them. And that's not all. Having a deeper engagement with donors turns them into stronger advocates for your organization and brings in new donors.

From September 26, 2011 --- Giving Clubs
A little over a year ago, I was creating a video for an organization that was having some trouble bringing in money for their annual fund. I mentioned starting a giving club. They started one and was able to raise a considerable amount of money from that. They were even able to raise money from donors who said they weren't going to give them any more that year.
Earlier this year I was filming Karen Rotko-Wynn for the "Mission Achievable" training and coaching series. And she told me this story on how she was able to help an organization bring in an additional $1 Million dollars by starting a giving club. I thought it was a great example of how easy it is to start a giving club even when people are skeptical.

From August 15, 2011 - Engaging a brand new Audience of Donors
Have you ever run into these two problems?
1) The need for your services outpaces the revenue you bring in.
2) You can't go to your client base for donations
That's exactly the spot the West Sound Wildlife Shelter found themselves in. In today's video, Barbara Sacerdote talks about what she and the rest of the board, staff, and volunteers did to engage a whole new set of donors and raise a bunch of money. And the funny part was, they were told by many folks that their idea wouldn't work. But as you'll hear, it was a huge success.

Do your donors feel like they NEED to donate to your nonprofit organization? Wouldn't it be great to have donors coming to you saying they want to donate money?
That's exactly what happened to Jessie Palmer at the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. But it didn't start off that way. In fact, those same donors had initially told him "No". So, what did Jessie and his team do to reverse the "no's"? He'll tell you in today's video.
